Thematic event on the execution of European Court of Human Rights’ judgments

ABOUT EVENT

The execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is essential to ensuring that the rights protected by the European Convention on Human Rights are effective in practice.

While States are responsible for implementing the Court’s judgments, the successful execution of these often requires the involvement of a wide range of actors at national and European level.

In recent years, the growing complexity of cases, evolving challenges across Europe and the need for lasting reforms have highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation and coordination of these actors.

This event brought together members of the Council of Europe Execution Coordinators Network, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), representatives of the Council of Europe, and academics, to:

  • Reflect on the respective roles and added value of NHRIs and execution coordinators in the execution process.
  • Exchange good practices and challenges in supporting timely, effective and sustainable implementation of ECtHR judgments.
  • Discuss the role of NHRIs in reporting to the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.
  • Consider how Council of Europe projects and joint initiatives can support stronger cooperation at national level.
  • Explore the broader contribution of NHRIs to human rights protection in Europe.

Through an opening panel, thematic breakout sessions and a final discussion, participants exchanged experiences, explored good practices and identified practical ways to strengthen cooperation.

This is with the ultimate goal of paving the way for more structured engagement between key actors and supporting more effective, transparent and sustainable processes for the execution of judgments across Europe.
