Warm welcome to our new member from Cyprus!

ENNHRI is delighted to welcome its 40th member, the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman) from Cyprus, as a B-Status NHRI. We are looking forward to working with Commissioner Eliza Savvidou and her team.

The Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman) in Cyprus was first established in 1991 as a control mechanism of the wider public sector and local authorities, with a mission to identify maladministration or violation of human rights by public authorities. New and important competences have since been assigned to the institution, which aim at protecting particularly vulnerable groups of citizens. The institution operates as the national authority for the protection of human rights (NHRI), as an equality body, as the national mechanism for the prevention of torture and as the national mechanism for monitoring the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
