GANHRI adopts statement on the role of NHRIs in relation to the Global Compact on Migration
On 10-11 December 2018, the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Global Compact for Migration) was adopted in Marrakesh after over a year of international negotiations.
The Global Compact is not a legally binding document but brings about a framework and principles to guide governments’ policies and practices on migration. It lays down 23 objectives for a safe, orderly and regular migration.
These objectives include, among others:
- Collecting and utilising accurate and disaggregated data as a basis for evidence-based policies on migration
- Providing accurate and timely information at all stages of migration
- Addressing and reducing vulnerabilities
- Using migration detention only as a measure of last resort and working towards alternatives
On the occasion of the adoption of the Global Compact, the President of the National Human Rights Council of Morocco, Ms. Amina Bouayach, delivered a statement on behalf of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
The Statement welcomes the adoption of the Global Compact and calls upon all stakeholders to work towards its implementation and to provide clear and effective avenues and fora for this purpose.
It also recalls that promoting and protecting the human rights of migrants is an important part of the work of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), in line with their broad mandate under the Paris Principles, and identifies how NHRIs can contribute to the implementation of the Global Compact.
