Background

In the context of rising populist narratives across Europe, it is important to rethink communication practices and re-formulate messages about economic and social rights (ESR) to ensure they are fully understood by the general public. This workshop will bring together National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) from across Europe – in particular, NHRI staff working on communications and ESR – to share experiences and engage in practical activities on effective ESR communication.

About the workshop

The workshop will allow participants to gain further understanding of key ESR concepts and how these concepts – including the universality of human rights – are being challenged. Koldo Casla, a Policy Director of a London-based charity organisation Just Fair, will present an innovative approach used in his work to tackle these challenges and encourage policy makers, civil society and the public to comprehend the relevance of a human right based approach.

Moreover, the workshop will provide a unique platform for European NHRIs to share their approaches, strategies and practices on how to deconstruct current narratives and communicate about ESR in a positive and impactful manner. Participants will be encouraged to engage in a dynamic discussion and openly debate different approaches when framing key communication messages about economic and social rights in their respective contexts.
