
ENNHRI Meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein
On 14 March 2016, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, met Professor Alan Miller, ENNHRI Chair, and Debbie Kohner, ENNHRI Secretary General, to discuss the role of ENNHRI and NHRIs in the current human rights context.
The High Commissioner remarked that ENNHRI has become a valued partner for OHCHR. ENNHRI’s contribution was underlined in relation to issues such as migration, counter-terrorism, conflict, Sustainable Development Goals, older persons’ human rights and economic and social rights.
Professor Miller reaffirmed ENNHRI’s commitment to support its members in strengthening the rule of law. He mentioned in particular the recent statement in support of the Polish NHRI, released by ENNHRI, together with OHCHR, Council of Europe and OSCE/ODIHR.
The participants reviewed topics of mutual concern, including the human rights implications of the proposed EU – Turkey deal on migrants, and opportunities for future collaboration.
Professor Miller mentioned the concrete actions that NHRIs and ENNHRI can take, including their monitoring, advisory, awareness-raising and reporting functions. The High Commissioner welcomed future engagement with ENNHRI to promote and protect human rights across wider Europe.
