Sustainable Development Goals

Human rights instruments and the 2030 Agenda are mutually reinforcing: human rights instruments and mechanisms will provide an important framework for the implementation of the SDGs, and the implementation of the SDGs will contribute to the realization of human rights.

Mérida Declaration on the Role of NHRIs in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in October 2015 encourages all NHRIs, in line with their mandates under the Paris Principles, to collaborate and contribute to a human rights-based approach to implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The recent adoption by the United Nations Statistical Commission of an indicator on the “Existence of independent NHRIs in compliance with the Paris Principles” under Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions is a testimony to the value of NHRIs’ work and a recognition of the legitimacy of NHRIs’ efforts to be placed among the key institutions for progress on the SDG agenda.”
