Ensuring compliance of armed forces with human rights standards: Human Rights Defender Institution of the Republic of Armenia

The Armenian NHRI has conducted several activities to strengthen the compliance of Armenian armed forces with human rights standards. This has involved a range of capacity-building for the NHRI’s staff members, including workshops on the role of NHRIs in challenging contexts, in crisis and towards the military.

The NHRI also participated in a study trip to Norway, along with representatives from the Ministry of Defence of Armenia, the Parliament and other government officials. Representatives exchanged practices with the Parliamentary Ombudsman for the Norwegian Armed Forces’ Office. The two Ombuds institutions agreed on building their cooperation further.

The Defender’s Office has also participated in a Statement on the role of NHRIs and Ombuds towards the military on the occasion of a conference dedicated to this topic.

The Council of Europe has supported the NHRI through funding and expert advice in this area. Find out more here.
